The Little or Klein Karoo is a long valley bordered by the Swartberg and Langeberg mountains. It has a semi-arid climate with winter rainfall. Succulents, aloes and spring flowers are a drawcard. Travel on the R62 from Cape Town via the towns of Montagu (hot springs), Barrydale (quirky restaurants), Ladismith (cheese),Oudtshoorn (ostriches) and on to De Rust or Uniondale. Oudtshoorn is known for it’s ostrich farming producing feathers, ostrich meat and ostrich skin leather goods. The Cango Caves, declared a National Monument in 1938, are approx. 30kms north of Oudtshoorn at the foothills of the Swartberg Range. Travel on and over the spectacular Swartberg Pass, declared a National Monument, to the town of Prince Albert in the Great or Groot Karoo.
