Western Cape

agritourism along the western cape

The Western Cape is the southernmost region of the African Continent with Cape Agulhas as its southernmost point. It is bordered by two oceans, the warm Indian Ocean to the south and the cold Atlantic Ocean to the west. The 6 districts in the Western Cape are the City of Cape Town, West Coast, Cape Winelands, Overberg, Eden and Central Karoo.

Most of the province is considered to have a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and warm dry summers. However, the Great Karoo and the Little Karoo, in the interior, have an arid to semi-arid climate with cold, frosty winters and hot summers with occasional thunderstorms and the Garden Route and Overberg on the south coast have a maritime climate with cool, moist winters and mild, moist summers.

The principal rivers of the province are the Berg and Olifants which drain into the Atlantic Ocean and the Breede and Gourits which drain into the Indian Ocean. The vegetation is extremely diverse, with one of the world's seven floral kingdoms almost exclusively endemic to the province, namely the Cape Floral Kingdom, most of which is covered by Fynbos. These evergreen heathlands are extremely rich in species diversity.

The Southern Right Whales spend summer feeding around the Antarctica and then migrate thousands of miles to the Cape waters, where the sheltered bays provide a perfect refuge to mate and calve.

Cape Town, the provincial capital, has been voted one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Tourists flock to the city to enjoy some of the numerous attractions such as a cable car trip up Table Mountain, a boat trip to Robben Island, a visit to Kirtenbosch National Botanical Gardens, shopping at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, enjoying the superb scenery and outdoor activities amongst other options.

Western Cape is probably South Africa's most important export province in terms of agricultural products. The deciduous fruit industry, wine industry and increasingly the citrus industry are all key export products that contribute significantly to the overall agri economy in SA.
